Hutch Personal Project Time
Posted on
Every fortnight on a Friday, Hutchies get the chance to work on a personal project. Something away from their usual work - for example, prototyping a new game, doing a course, or creating a new tool or process.
With so many interesting and inspiring projects going on, we wanted to share some with you!
Sinéad’s Project
First up is Sinéad, one of our 3D artists and her super-cute Hutch mascot!
I chose to create a character, as it's something I wanted to practice, I designed this character to be used as a mascot for our charity work, but mainly it was an excuse to make a cute character and learn lots of skills while doing it!
The character was modelled and rigged in Maya, textures were made in Substance Painter, and the renders were done in Arnold.
Having the time to use new tools and workflows has not only been super inspiring and fun, but allows us to experiment without having to worry about the final product being perfect. For example I’d never get the chance to work on a character as an environment artist, so it was a real treat to be given enough time and support to create Hutch bot!

Will’s Project
Next up, Will, a 3D artist on Rebel Racing and his brand new game concept!
I created Rocket Road, a concept for a racing game set during the Cold War. Players can play as different nations and groups from the time period and race against each other in crazy locations around the world! I wanted to push myself with this project and work in a style that I wasn't used to.
Personal project time is really useful as it gives me extra time to hone my skills and it gives me the chance to explore some of the more out there ideas in my art that I don’t always have the time to visualise. The work that other people produce for the PP days is also really cool to see as you get to discover what other people in the studio are passionate about and that in turn helps inspire me in my own work.
